How to Ergonomically Set Up Your Laptop as a Desktop
So many of us are using laptops as our main computers these days, and therefore spending long periods of time using them. Unfortunately, the majority of this time is usually spent with the laptop on your lap while sitting on the couch, or in another similar position. In addition, posture, keyboard spacing, screen size and positioning, pointing devices and other ergonomic features are compromised for the sake of portability.
If you are like many people, even though your laptop is designed for portability, you are using it as a desktop computer. Despite the poor ergonomics associated with laptops, certain steps can be taken to improve the ergonomic setup of your laptop.
To transform your laptop into an ergonomically set up computer, use a laptop stand with an external keyboard and mouse. This device allows you to place your computer on the stand and then use a separate keyboard and mouse. This raises the screen of the laptop to the proper height (at or slightly below eye level) and you then use the external keyboard and mouse as you would with a desktop computer. Many laptop stands also have built in document holders where you can place hard copy documents over the keyboard of the laptop for easy reference.
Taking these simple steps will allow you to stay comfortable and avoid pain or injury associated with spending long periods of time working on your laptop.
